Jonas Valfridsson
COMPOSER


Born 1980 in Jönköping, Sweden, Valfridsson studied classical composition at School of music and drama at Gothenburg university, the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and Conservatoire National Supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris.
Being awarded the The Toru Takemitsu Composition Award in 2007, Valfridsson received international attention for his orchestral compositions with it’s imaginative instrumentation, subtle textures and lyrical melodic writing. Following up with Uppsala composition award in 2010 and Anne-Sophie Mutter Composition award in 2013, Valfridsson established himself with a range of orchestral compositions. He has been resident of Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia in Bamberg, Germany, as well as Composer-in-residence with Riga sinfonietta, Dalasinfoniettan and Jönköpings sinfonietta. He has received commissions and performances by Tokyo opera city orchestra, The Royal Swedish orchestra, Norrköping symphony orchestra, Görlitz symphony orchestra, among many others.
Valfridsson is a versatile composer that work in a wide range of fields and genres. His chamber opera När knoppar brister was premiered in 2022 at The Royal Swedish Opera, whom also commissioned the ballet Vem där? for the Royal Swedish Ballet. Varför älska vi att sjunka? for orchestra and narrator received a warm reception at it’s premiere, as well as the cross-over collaboration Kite at the Royal opera.
He makes regular appearances on Swedish public service television Klassiska Klubben as well as columnist in newspaper Expressen.
